Swizz Beats - Poison

Sometimes less is more, a mantra that Swizz Beatz seems to have taken heart in his new album, Poison. While Swizz is a renowned hip-hop producer, his own efforts to produce a solid record have largely fell short over the past few decades. Given it has been 11 years since he has even attempted his own album, it is likely that he is aware of this fact.

However, Poison is an amazing album, filled with the larger than life beats and snappy raps that the hip-hop scene needs right now. It is also a hit, probably because Swizz backs off and keeps his own headlining appearances at a minimum. This time around, Swizz uses his friends and fellow rappers in abundance, allowing them to steal choruses and bridges throughout the tracks and the result is brilliance.

It turns out that a little Swizz is all we need to be in love with his sound again. Instead of over producing the album, Swizz spends a few minutes rapping on tracks like “Pistol on My Side (P.O.M.S)” and then let’s Lil’ Wayne take the reins. Other featured artists include 2 Chainz, Young Thug, and Pusha. Thoroughly infused with the sounds of Southern Rap, ‘Poison’ is worth a listen for its gritty, honest, and sometimes catchy beats.
