What is a Heart Attack and how can it be avoided?

Heart attack or myocardial infarction is a medical emergency caused by reduced coronary blood flow to the heart and result in myocardial tissue damage. Other terms that refer to a heart attack are cardiac infarction or coronary thrombosis. According to the CDC, somebody experiences a heart attack every 40 seconds. This tallies the total number of heart attacks annually to about 805,000. Out of these, 605,000 occur as the first heart attack while the rest occur in individuals who had previously experienced another heart attack. Most cases of myocardial infarction are silent, and often individuals are unaware of the damage that it impacts.

The most effective way of preventing cardiac infarction is through a healthy lifestyle. This is achieved primarily through eating a balanced healthy diet and exercising. Eat plenty of fruits, whole grains, vegetables, and foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids like fish, sardines, and tuna. Invest in taking time off to relax. Meditation, listening to soft music, and yoga have proven to be an effective way to unwind after a stressful day.

Scientists recommend total cessation of smoking and reduced alcohol intake as preventive measures in high-risk individuals. Additionally, avoiding stressful conditions and getting good quality sleep is thought to be useful in preventing myocardial infarction. Doctors recommend reducing the levels of bad cholesterol, which is the low-density lipo-proteins and triglycerides. Maintain a high fiber diet and reduce fat intake, especially for saturated fats. For individuals previously diagnosed with myocardial infarction or those with cardiovascular diseases, ensure that they take your medication religiously.
