The Owl, released on last week on September 20th, 2019, is the sixth studio album from country group Zack Brown Band.
The album marks a paradigm shift for the group as they move toward a dance-pop direction with multiple guest artists, including Brandi Carlile. Some of the songs also adapt a rap and hip-hop beat.
Songs like “Somebody I knew” is a deeply personal song of Zack Brown expressing his own struggles with depression and isolation.
Other songs such as “Me and the Boys in the Band” and “Shoefly Pie” have a more upbeat melody and feature sections of beautifully performed solos from the group.
The entire Owl album marks a unique place in the bands direction as they go through personal issues. These life experiences are beautifully transmuted into songs that bridge a gap between classic country, pop, and hip-hop.
If this album is any indication, we should expect the band’s musical career to further explore new styles and experimentation.
