Released on July 5, 2019, Machine Gun Kelly’s fourth studio album, Hotel Diablo, presents listeners with 14 tracks deeply infused with MGK’s battles against his personal demons. These demons include the issues he has dealt with regarding his parents.
MGK also launches into the demons his loved ones have faced. This includes those of Pete Davidson, MGK’s best friend who was reportedly struggling with mental health issues after breaking up with then-fiancee Ariana Grande.
There’s also a clap-back at Eminem in the track, “FLOOR 13”. The two rappers have been feuding since 2018, and Eminem released a song called “Killshot” in September. The feud appeared to have died down, but it still made its way onto Hotel Diablo. Although, if anything can be inferred by the lyrics, MGK is pretty much over that beef.
The album doesn’t have a lot of new-fangled sounds like what you’ll hear from other rappers out there. However, its intensely personal lyrics flow in the way you’d expect them to from Machine Gun Kelly. Raw and emotive, Hotel Diablo shows us just how psychologically deep MGK is willing to go with his music.
