It’s a big day for fans of Chance the Rapper as the American rapper and actor from Chicago is back with “The Big Day.” Despite sopping up some mainstream fame as a guest host on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” and garnering a Grammy Award in 2017 for his 2016 mixtape “Coloring Book,” Chance has seemed to have remained independent since the debut of his premiere mixtape “10 Day” in 2012.
His fans have waited a long time for this new release. The 22-track album features an eclectic cast and at some points builds off the familiar themes from his last disc. Here are a few highlights of an album grounded in his more recently discovered adulthood.
Chance’s album intro, ‘All Day Long,’ includes his no doubt welcome rapid-fire flow following the echoing inclusion of his now trademark opening refrain “And we back.” It is a recollective throwback phrase that also is reminiscent of a series of frenetic opening cuts from previous audio efforts. A John Legend chorus provides a complimentary touch.
‘Do Do You Remember’ is an ethereal tuneful team-up with Death Cab for Cutie’s frontman Ben Gibbard. Here Chance poignantly grows out of his youth as he preps for his big day of marriage.
‘Handsome’ and the noteworthy Lil Durk and Nicki Minaj collaboration ‘Slide Around’ is just two examples of Chance’s fun rhymes too. Overall, hardcore fans should find this new work to be both entertaining and reflective. It is undoubtedly a big day for both Chance and his following.
